Our Roots
A truly rewarding effort.
We fell in love with olive trees and olive oil for several reasons: They are well adapted to dry climates, they last forever, they are important in human history and they take only a modicum of care. As we dreamed of starting a side business to create a small cash flow in our later years we thought of many ideas....The idea of olive trees and olive oil stuck.
Where we live, in Northeastern San Luis Obispo County, California, our normal rainfall is 7-10 inches per year. That severely limits the types of crops that you can grow, especially since we have little available groundwater for irrigation. The olive fruit matures and is picked sometime between the middle of November and the middle of December. Our freezing times (freezing will ruin the fruit) normally comes after that period. The Flying M is a perfect match for the nature of olive cultivation.
Olea Europa has figured prominently in European and Mid East history. Over 2000 years ago, Cleopatra was very fond of using Olive Oil to keep her hair lush. It is also said that she bathed often with spoiled Donkey milk......What can I say? We do know that some of the oldest olive trees in the world today in are Jordan and the West Bank. It is said that there are commercially producing trees, in the area, that are well over 1000 years old...
